When business is slow and ’financial’ belts are tightened, marketing is usually the first area to suffer. Upon closer investigation you may find that this really is a case of ‘cutting off your nose to spite your face’. By delaying work on that new website, or not getting that new company brochure printed you may be doing more harm than good!

Rather than withdraw from the ’scene’, now may be the time to ‘get out there’ and promote your business. When times are hard businesses shop around more, they look for value added services, they look for products or services that improve their productivity, they may be looking for you! If you are not there being seen in the right places, making your presence known and keeping in touch, before you know it the customers you have already may be gone!

When considering how to market and who to market to perhaps asking yourself a few key questions may highlight where you lack the right tools to do the job. [..more..]

The BBC news website is the source for this article once again. The word on the street is that your visitors are interested in ‘getting to the point’ and this trend looks likely to continue.

Statistics supplied by usability guru Jakob Nielson indicate that visitors are becoming less patient (we already know about the 3 click mantra!). Figures for 2008 demonstrate that only 25% of visitors arrive at the home page and then drill down into the site (as opposed to 60% in 2004). Visitors are accessing sites at the point of ‘deep links’ as a result of ’searches’ as they become more search savvy.

So what does that mean to the potential business website owner?

Companies could find themselves with significantly increased advertising costs after a policy change from Google on the use of trade marked terms to trigger search engine adverts. But experts say that brand holders might try to fight the policy in court.

Google has announced the lifting of a ban on one company buying the right to use another’s trade mark to trigger its own advert. The move brings the policy for trade marks held in the UK and Ireland in line with that for trade mark rights held in the US and Canada.

Google Improvement to the Top Ad Placement Formula
How is the formula for top ad placement changing?

In the coming weeks, Google Adwords are improving how high quality ads are selected for top positions above Google search results. This change is designed to improve the quality of Adword ad results, and to give more control over achieving top ad placement.

The core components of the top ad placement formula will remain price and quality. However, Google are improving the way we factor price into the formula. Google are also adjusting the way your actual cost-per-click (CPC) is determined for ads in top spots. As always, only ads that meet Google’s stringent quality requirements will be eligible to appear in top spots.
